As a blanket statement, it may be too wide. I agree that that should be a fundamental freedom, but it depends on how one says it and for what purpose you say it. If you are obnoxious in the way you say it, or if it is not the truth, you are abusing your freedom. If you stick to the facts and speak the truth and convey the message with love and respect for the other person, then you should have the right to say so.

The question now is what is truth? The demand cannot be absolute truth, since that is hardly attainable. It must at least be true as far as the speaker is concerned and he must have made a reasonable effort to ensure that what he said is true.

The truth often hurts and is unpleasant, but it still remains the truth. If the objective is to help the hearer then it should be allowed. If the objective is to hurt or humiliate the hearer I would say that is abuse of this freedom.

In any case, let us err on allowing too much of this freedom than too little.

The speaker should always remember what Jesus said: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.” Mat 12:36 ESV
